Understanding the Genuine Student Requirement
From March 2024, the Australian Department of Home Affairs replaced the long-standing Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement with the new Genuine Student (GS) test for Student Visa (Subclass 500) applications. What Changed?
The key difference is the shift in focus. The old GTE assessed whether you genuinely intended to stay in Australia temporarily. The new GS requirement focuses on whether you are a genuine student — that is, whether your primary motivation for coming to Australia is to obtain a quality education.
What Assessors Look For
- Course relevance — Does the chosen course align with your previous education and stated career goals?
- Gap analysis — If there is a significant gap between your last study and this application, can you explain it?
- Country conditions — Are there genuine educational reasons for studying in Australia rather than your home country?
- Immigration history — Your previous visa applications and compliance record.
- Value of the course — Does the course add genuine value to your qualifications and career prospects?
Tips for a Strong Application
Write a detailed and honest personal statement explaining your educational goals. Include specific references to the course content, how it builds on your existing qualifications, and how you plan to use the education in your career. Avoid generic statements — assessors can identify templated responses.
