GSM is one of the most popular routes to Australian permanent residency because it does not require an employer to sponsor you — your skills and qualifications speak for themselves. GSM Visa Subclasses

• Subclass 189 — Skilled Independent: A permanent visa for skilled workers with an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) who receive an invitation through SkillSelect. No state nomination or employer sponsorship required.
• Subclass 190 — Skilled Nominated: A permanent visa for skilled workers nominated by a state or territory government. Nomination adds 5 points and is competitive — states prioritise occupations and applicants based on their local labour market needs.
• Subclass 491 — Skilled Work Regional (Provisional): A 5-year provisional visa for workers nominated by a state or territory or sponsored by a family member in a designated regional area. Visa holders must live, work, and study in regional Australia. After 3 years, eligible holders can apply for the Subclass 191 permanent visa.

Points Test — What Counts?

• Age: Up to 30 points for applicants aged 25–32.
• English proficiency: Up to 20 points for superior English (IELTS 8.0+ in each band).
• Skilled employment: Up to 20 points for 8+ years of skilled work in your nominated occupation.
• Australian study: 5 points for completing at least 1 Australian qualification of at least 2 academic years in regional Australia.
• NAATI certification: 5 points for a community language credential (NAATI CCL).
• Professional year: 5 points for completing a Professional Year Program in Australia.
• Partner skills: 10 points if your partner has a nominated occupation, skills assessment, and competent English; 5 points if your partner has competent English only.
