When you are granted an Australian visa, you do not have to leave your family behind. Who Qualifies as a Dependent?

• Spouse or de facto partner: Your married or de facto partner who is in a genuine, ongoing relationship with you at the time of application and at the time of decision.
• Dependent children: Children under 18 years of age, or those aged 18–23 who are full-time students and financially dependent on you, or any age if they have a disability that makes them unable to work.
• Other dependants: In some visa categories, other relatives who are financially and personally dependent on you may also be included.

• Failing to declare a dependent at the time of lodgement may result in that family member being unable to join you later.
• Children born after lodgement but before the visa is granted can often be added to the application, but the correct procedure must be followed.
• Dependants on student visas are generally entitled to work up to 48 hours per fortnight while the primary student's course is in session.
