Understanding the Points Test
Australia's skilled migration program uses a points-based system to assess applicants for Subclass 189, 190, and 491 visas. While the minimum threshold is 65 points, most successful applicants score 80-95 points in competitive occupation categories. Here is how to maximise your score.
Points Breakdown
- Age (max 30 points) — 25-32 years scores the maximum. Points decrease after 33 and are zero after 45.
- English (max 20 points) — Superior English (IELTS 8+ in each band) scores 20 points. Proficient (7+) scores 10 points.
- Work Experience (max 20 points) — Overseas experience up to 15 points (8+ years), Australian experience up to 20 points (8+ years).
- Education (max 20 points) — PhD scores 20, Bachelor or Masters scores 15.
- Specialist education (5 points) — Masters by research or PhD in STEM from an Australian institution.
- Australian study requirement (5 points) — At least 2 years of study in Australia.
- NAATI credential (5 points) — Community language accreditation through a NAATI-approved course.
- Partner skills (10 points) — If your partner also has a positive skills assessment and competent English.
- State nomination (5-15 points) — 190 visa adds 5 points, 491 adds 15 points.
- Regional study (5 points) — Study in a regional area of Australia.
Quick Wins to Boost Your Score
Improve your English: Moving from IELTS 7 to IELTS 8 in each band adds 10 points. This is often the fastest way to increase your score. Consider PTE Academic — many candidates find it easier to achieve high scores.
NAATI CCL Test: Passing the Credentialed Community Language test adds 5 points. A2B Visa offers NAATI course training to help you prepare. The test is available in many languages and can be completed relatively quickly.
Consider state nomination: If you are flexible on location, a Subclass 491 regional visa adds 15 points. States like South Australia, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory have more accessible nomination requirements.
Get your partner assessed: If your spouse or de facto partner has skills on the occupation list and competent English, you can claim up to 10 additional points.
